As my final term at Roehampton University comes to its end, it seems only fitting that my blog should too!</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From writing this blog, I have discovered that I in fact have much more stereotypical views on student food and student life than many of my peers. It seems that I am the typical "only eat one meal a day so you can buy a new dress" example, while other students consider food an important thing to spend money on. However, we do all seem pretty unanimous that the cheaper and less time consuming, the better!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think this stereotypical view of the student in fact comes from many of the books that are aimed at us; most assuming that we are poor, lazy, hungry and pretty unskilled when it comes to the kitchen.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In spite of all that, I have managed to enlighten myself to some new ways of cooking - ways such as the one-pot meal which is certainly one I shall be sticking too, student or otherwise.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, not being snobby when it comes to left overs is something else which is new to me, and perhaps this new-found openness will help me save money - thus having to skrimp less in the future!</div>

Progression of Pasta</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In Italy, pasta is not considered the bog-standard convenience food we tend to use it as. Italians place great pride in their range and treatment of pasta; there is a different sauce which goes specifically with a shape of pasta; a different wine for every sauce. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwd_1KNoSMKlN_5JR2dQCsbrjvQ1hICfU0me8UiRGBFNw5A-FfqId1E9xLoSX1TeZweCRG9bKpBIaakr45H6i6s64As3SDIN10w4iLHuh-Oo9y_koFZZgUBtSvsqxhyphenhyphenOrv1m0mf9pKOSo/s640/blogger-image-2114031858.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwd_1KNoSMKlN_5JR2dQCsbrjvQ1hICfU0me8UiRGBFNw5A-FfqId1E9xLoSX1TeZweCRG9bKpBIaakr45H6i6s64As3SDIN10w4iLHuh-Oo9y_koFZZgUBtSvsqxhyphenhyphenOrv1m0mf9pKOSo/s640/blogger-image-2114031858.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Writing for the Guardian, Italian chef Aldo Zilli claims that "In Italy, every meal is a celebration. Italians don't just eat anything: they are so fussy about what they put on the table that only pasta of the highest quality will do"<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18.98714256286621px;">.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In contrast, the pasta I as a student am used to is the much less glamorous:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzQ8oDO86wPPXTfk98pG_S447mumt_5JBnY6YCuvhWyzCZpNQ7HvsE6OZJXABO5IxGbWZz82mTUNUEgTH-2ofXOtS_dIsvfJX6CoY6MhLQsp94VPlizyDpJI-FLXG50vjshvOajww6Ijc/s640/blogger-image--1172426322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzQ8oDO86wPPXTfk98pG_S447mumt_5JBnY6YCuvhWyzCZpNQ7HvsE6OZJXABO5IxGbWZz82mTUNUEgTH-2ofXOtS_dIsvfJX6CoY6MhLQsp94VPlizyDpJI-FLXG50vjshvOajww6Ijc/s320/blogger-image--1172426322.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This, coming in at around 17p a bag is cheap, but quality it is not; economical but mainly just tasteless.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
However, it does add bulk to meals, which is always useful when trying to fill an empty stomach. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fresh pasta is more of a luxury, and unfortunately some days, all I can throw together for dinner is dried pasta (cooked obviously) and sauce. Not the most exciting of meals!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is the price and quantity, certainly not the quality, which makes products such as this staples in student cupboards (or the ones in my house at least)!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10174991609995070526noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-211656388954156549.post-63579377601832557302014-03-25T15:05:00.002-07:002014-03-25T20:19:30.159-07:00<h2 style="text-align: center;">
QUESTIONNAIRE</h2>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For this blog post I decided that I would take advantage of the resources around me (namely my friends) and question them about their experiences with student food!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Questions: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
How much do you spend on food a week?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Do you think you skrimp on food so you can spend money on other things?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What is the one staple food you always have in your cupboard?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What is your favourite meal to be cooked at home?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
How does that differ (if at all) to your food at uni?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The general consensus when it came to expenditure was that between £15 and £20 a week seemed like an appropriate amount to spend on food. I was also somewhat surprised to be told that the majority of people I asked claimed that they would in fact not try and save money on food so they could spend it on other non-essentials, but rather consider food one of the things that they would prioritise - clearly this is where we differ!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The foods considered "staples" were the typical pasta, rice and potatoes - generally speaking just any inexpensive, filling carbohydrate.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As for the favourite meal to be made when at home, the answer was pretty unanimous: the good old fashioned roast dinner. No surprises here as it is the height of comfort food.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When asked about how that differs to uni food or why they wouldn't make this themselves the answers ranged from laziness to just plain lack of knowledge.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think asking others has enlightened me to the possibility that not all students view food the same, and perhaps my opinions and behaviours are just more stereotypical than others. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
LEFT OVERS!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Loving your left overs seems like something which we're all a bit out of touch with. We're a nation notorious for being wasteful; throwing out perfectly edible food just because it hasn't been finished.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have to admit I am still guilty of this, despite University teaching me to be significantly more thrifty and just generally careful, I am the first to throw out plenty of perfectly good pasta purely because I haven't used it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think the issue is that by definition we see left over food as waste, regardless of whether it would lend itself to a future meal. However, as money-saving has become more of a priority for more people. keeping left over food, or even preparing extra to use at a later date has become more usual, with TV programmes and books created revolving around this exact subject.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's books such as this one:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_cTxEudB-UUUO4hTFkejPAtz_3wgbC2byiTdMjCsed9gp_gDkn3B5U_TxE01BhBKqLx31fC_NI28xn192fyrVOliMPi2HS-scNEKpL5Iba6v9n0jJ9IU8CgTkSgJKIr0yd6fgvkp5xW0/s640/blogger-image--2040667201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_cTxEudB-UUUO4hTFkejPAtz_3wgbC2byiTdMjCsed9gp_gDkn3B5U_TxE01BhBKqLx31fC_NI28xn192fyrVOliMPi2HS-scNEKpL5Iba6v9n0jJ9IU8CgTkSgJKIr0yd6fgvkp5xW0/s320/blogger-image--2040667201.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
that have been written specifically to encourage people to not just view their left overs as waste food, but as a means to create a whole other meal. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Example of a "thrifty" recipe:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHs7tvsZjjpuU3n57mcTeZh1YEhEgdhmr_e_BpJfZbB33tN9MeMWJFhrLoiBUaYaRPkj6D8Yq8dynnEj4_kebFPYiBUjncqnkSttV1tBVkEaAGTFYHvFWXkKKOiz6kdsOAciN8bLIQGyY/s640/blogger-image--536761127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHs7tvsZjjpuU3n57mcTeZh1YEhEgdhmr_e_BpJfZbB33tN9MeMWJFhrLoiBUaYaRPkj6D8Yq8dynnEj4_kebFPYiBUjncqnkSttV1tBVkEaAGTFYHvFWXkKKOiz6kdsOAciN8bLIQGyY/s320/blogger-image--536761127.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided (as an effort to be just generally more economical) that I should have a go at a left overs recipe too!</div>
<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIm91rCPj_WMDNZUWszuyIeM-Mcpg9gu3i9xbTJAZUyr2EPLF36aswYQIFqdcgBjNAy9SMUfhsUp64NxFVXmIa9cd6Zs014ZI9iahkg6WTk7NOz6NmgKVco3HO4nWU07ABf3P4t88gEJw/s640/blogger-image--858886986.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIm91rCPj_WMDNZUWszuyIeM-Mcpg9gu3i9xbTJAZUyr2EPLF36aswYQIFqdcgBjNAy9SMUfhsUp64NxFVXmIa9cd6Zs014ZI9iahkg6WTk7NOz6NmgKVco3HO4nWU07ABf3P4t88gEJw/s320/blogger-image--858886986.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went for an omelette - used up my left over vegetables and some meat, and it was delicious! Another money saving idea I am on board with! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br /></div>

The Wonder of the One-Pot Meal</h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The use of the one-pot meal is again not one that is designed specifically for students, but has become favoured because of its tendency to provide large quantities of warm, comforting food with minimal washing up!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While investigating the sensation that is the one-pot meal, I thought I should have a go myself!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The recipe I decided to try was the staple Chilli Con Carne - a meal that is perfect for pre or even post night out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The recipe that I followed was:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 large red onions, finely chopped</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Olive oil</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 Carrots, chopped</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 Garlic cloves, crushed</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2 tsp chilli powder</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 and a half tsp smoked paprika</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 and a half tsp dried oregano</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1kg beef mince</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4 tbsp tomato puree</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
800g tinned kidney beans</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
800g tinned tomatoes</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 litre beef stock</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
sea salt and black pepper to taste.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And it turned out like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-LHjLb6_YOuNYeAlAQRaEVh1RwL1Dla3pzsKI2APPHA-cXCkzt_ogk4CGuIJMAYrCNlLmIjbaEUD1ssroEP_adZuPFe0H6NqAzMKKqOvAWnCZnyZWVBVSNPn2nza28HRDlNc9vD7-dCA/s640/blogger-image--2136524117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-LHjLb6_YOuNYeAlAQRaEVh1RwL1Dla3pzsKI2APPHA-cXCkzt_ogk4CGuIJMAYrCNlLmIjbaEUD1ssroEP_adZuPFe0H6NqAzMKKqOvAWnCZnyZWVBVSNPn2nza28HRDlNc9vD7-dCA/s320/blogger-image--2136524117.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">During...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim07BMWEOyjQbzNCP7QRlWCJpqQLzMpd8r0XBv1o34aKT4MqM3WqR_nqML_rv0Jjtv9nAnRFIQhbnTDiVvbZakriYyjl-pOt0Pnu_zwWUZaakAg2bqm0EDDyaYNp7cBdNsIrnJbLkLjLU/s640/blogger-image--14342747.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim07BMWEOyjQbzNCP7QRlWCJpqQLzMpd8r0XBv1o34aKT4MqM3WqR_nqML_rv0Jjtv9nAnRFIQhbnTDiVvbZakriYyjl-pOt0Pnu_zwWUZaakAg2bqm0EDDyaYNp7cBdNsIrnJbLkLjLU/s320/blogger-image--14342747.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And the finished product!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The benefit that I found with doing a meal such as this ( despite the deliciousness and lack of washing up), was the amount of meals it provided. Although making something with so much meat can seem expensive for a student, I got around 6 meals out of this one cooking session, which not only saved me pennies, but time too! I can now say with some certainty that I for one will be indulging in more mass-preparation such as this. I'm all for the one-pot meal! </div>

<u><i><b><span style="color: #666666;">Cooking in a Badsitter - Katherine Whitehorn.</span></b></i></u></h2>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiERgiT2v5QWjD4F_340VYr_gfwKaNxAHmvnU7NBUlo6A1MGP9ICUzXS0SaZUkIifXfwF9tJtZMrVeJxNULDEhbZH8Z_FY_-rexQqhV3SgPurQdSMgT6N3f92UZzFhkUaI-95w-mS-n7Xg/s640/blogger-image-425561394.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiERgiT2v5QWjD4F_340VYr_gfwKaNxAHmvnU7NBUlo6A1MGP9ICUzXS0SaZUkIifXfwF9tJtZMrVeJxNULDEhbZH8Z_FY_-rexQqhV3SgPurQdSMgT6N3f92UZzFhkUaI-95w-mS-n7Xg/s320/blogger-image-425561394.jpg" width="242" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i>"Cooking a decent meal in a bedsitter is not just a matter of finding something that can be cooked over a single gas ring. It is a problem of finding somewhere to put down the fork while you take the lid off the saucepan, and then finding somewhere else to put the lid. It is finding a place to keep the butter where it will not get mixed up with your razor or your hairpins. It is having your hands covered with flour and a pot boiling over on to your landlady's carpet, and no water to mop any of it nearer than the bathroom at the other end of the landing. it is cooking at floor level, in a hurry with nowhere to put the salad but the washing up bowl, which in any case is full of socks."</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the 1960's and 70's it was not uncommon for students to find themselves living in bedsits. My mum once told me the story of her sister who had to live in a bedsit when she was at university and had the most miserable time of her life. She lived in one room, in a house shared with an elderly landlady which apparently, was about as much fun as being poked in the eye with a wet fish. Katherine Whitehorn writes <i>Cooking in a Bedsitter </i>for people in exactly that kind of situation; people who often are living without their parents for the first time, sharing their usually private space with strangers and without much cooking knowledge or cooking equipment - perfect for students. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Although the book itself was not published specifically for students, one could imagine that with its somewhat alarmingly simple recipes such as :</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.6; padding: 1em 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Sausage and Smash</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.6; padding: 1em 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
4 pork or beef sausages<br />
a little fat<br />
1 tin condensed vegetable soup</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic; line-height: 1.6; padding: 1em 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Fry sausages over medium flame 10 minutes; pour contents of tin into pan, and stir until heated, 3-4 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
which calls for very little ingredients or talent, this cookbook would have, and could still be, quite the hit! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>

<b>"Have you ever burned your hand making popsicles? Do you think Al Dente invented Spaghetti?"</b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This ridiculous first line from the 2002 edition of Dede Hall's revolutionary cookbook shows an (albeit exaggerated) expectation of the extent of student's cooking abilities. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The Starving Student's Cookbook, </i>first published in 1983 is one of the earliest examples of a cookbook designed specifically for students. This book, aimed at the "clueless gourmet", focuses on creating cheap, quick meals, as stereotypically time and money are the two things students are constantly short on. Because of this stereotype, one will find that cookbooks aimed at students will consistently claim to save you either money or time, if not both, because it is assumed that is what students long for; a time and cost effective way to prepare delicious meals. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The importance placed on the simpleness of meals is a theme carried throughout student food. A simple internet search for "quick and easy student meals" brings up this particular gem from http://studentrecipes.com/:</div>

<div style="color: #666666;">
Open the cupboard and get out a glass</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
go over to the tap and turn on the cold (or hot if you would prefer)</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
place the glass under the running water but be carefull not to get wet</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
when the glass is full remove it from under the tap</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
turn off the tap and hold the glass</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
hold the glass to your mouth tipping it towards you but be carefull not to spill any or you will have to dry it up</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
once finished put the glass in the dishwasher or sink or repeat if you are still thirsty.</div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Spoof recipes such as this one show a comical, exaggerated take on the student diet, but again emphasise the importance of quick, cheap eating for students. </div>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>It seems fair to assume that student food is not something that is considered the epitome of fine dining.</i></span></h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;"> Everyone has their own reason for attending University; whether it be the night life, socialising, furthering your education or simply getting out of the family home. Whatever your reason may be, it is unlikely that what you really wanted to experience at University was no money, leading to low budgets, leading to questionable meal after questionable meal. For some reason when at University, when most of us are sampling our first taste of independence, food becomes much less important than anything else you could spend money on. </span></div>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;">Despite the fact that, since birth, we have all been perfectly aware that food is something we need to live, suddenly new clothes, alcohol, days and nights out and all other unnecessary things become infinitely more important. It seems that as students we will willingly sacrifice not only our quality, but our quantity of food for fun.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;">With this blog I hope to look at the evolution of student food - why and how certain foods have become staples in a student's cupboard and whether these foods have changed and evolved along with the University experience. </span></div>
